In the early morning hours of July 31, 2022, a night that reportedly began like many others for a group of Ohio teenagers ended in devastation inside an industrial area of Strongsville.

Mackenzie Shirilla, then 17 years old, had spent part of the evening with her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, Davion Flanagan. According to testimony and investigative findings later presented in court, the group had been together socially before leaving in Shirilla’s Toyota Camry during the early morning hours.

The industrial streets were dark, nearly deserted, and silent in the early Sunday morning hours as the Camry traveled through Strongsville.

Surveillance footage later presented during trial reportedly captured Shirilla’s Toyota Camry making a controlled turn from Pearl Road onto Progress Drive at approximately 5:34 a.m. Roughly one minute later, onboard telemetry data and additional CCTV footage allegedly showed the vehicle accelerating toward nearly 100 mph before crashing into the PLIDCO commercial building at approximately 5:35 a.m.

Investigators later stated the accelerator pedal was allegedly fully depressed in the seconds leading up to impact. Prosecutors also pointed to steering data allegedly showing active driver input through roadway curves immediately before impact, arguing the vehicle remained under deliberate control until the final seconds before the crash.

Authorities further stated there was reportedly no evidence of braking, no evasive steering, and no indication of mechanical failure that would explain the collision.

The crash was catastrophic.

Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan were killed. Mackenzie Shirilla survived with severe injuries.

Because the crash occurred inside a quiet industrial area early on a Sunday morning, there were reportedly no immediate witnesses. Investigators later stated the wreckage remained undiscovered for approximately 45 minutes after impact. Davion Flanagan

Davion Flanagan was remembered by loved ones as loyal, athletic, outgoing, and deeply loved by his family and friends.

Friends and family described him as highly creative and passionate about barbering. He had recently completed his senior football season with the Strongsville Mustangs and was reportedly working full-time while saving money to attend barber college. Loved ones stated he enjoyed cutting hair for teammates and friends and hoped to turn that passion into a future career.

Following his death, family members and community supporters later worked to establish memorial and scholarship-related efforts in his honor.

Both young men were described by loved ones as teenagers with futures still unfolding before their lives were suddenly cut short.
