The Final Drive Down Progress Drive
In the early morning hours of July 31, 2022, a night that reportedly began like many others for a group of Ohio teenagers ended in devastation inside an industrial area of Strongsville.
Mackenzie Shirilla, then 17 years old, had spent part of the evening with her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, Davion Flanagan. According to testimony and investigative findings later presented in court, the group had been together socially before leaving in Shirilla’s Toyota Camry during the early morning hours.
The industrial streets were dark, nearly deserted, and silent in the early Sunday morning hours as the Camry traveled through Strongsville.
Surveillance footage later presented during trial reportedly captured Shirilla’s Toyota Camry making a controlled turn from Pearl Road onto Progress Drive at approximately 5:34 a.m. Roughly one minute later, onboard telemetry data and additional CCTV footage allegedly showed the vehicle accelerating toward nearly 100 mph before crashing into the PLIDCO commercial building at approximately 5:35 a.m.
Investigators later stated the accelerator pedal was allegedly fully depressed in the seconds leading up to impact. Prosecutors also pointed to steering data allegedly showing active driver input through roadway curves immediately before impact, arguing the vehicle remained under deliberate control until the final seconds before the crash.
Authorities further stated there was reportedly no evidence of braking, no evasive steering, and no indication of mechanical failure that would explain the collision.
The crash was catastrophic.
Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan were killed. Mackenzie Shirilla survived with severe injuries.
Because the crash occurred inside a quiet industrial area early on a Sunday morning, there were reportedly no immediate witnesses. Investigators later stated the wreckage remained undiscovered for approximately 45 minutes after impact. Court records and police reports indicated the vehicle sat lodged against the building while the victims remained trapped inside and Mackenzie Shirilla’s foot allegedly remained pinned against the accelerator pedal.
Authorities were only alerted after a passing motorist reportedly spotted the destroyed vehicle and contacted 911 around 6:15 a.m.
When first responders arrived, they encountered a scene later described in court proceedings as violent and devastating. The vehicle had been almost completely destroyed by the impact force, debris covered the surrounding area, and emergency crews reportedly had to use heavy rescue equipment to remove Shirilla from beneath the crushed dashboard area.
What initially appeared to some as a horrific high-speed accident would eventually become one of Ohio’s most heavily debated murder cases.
The Young Lives Behind the Headlines
Dominic Russo
Dominic Russo was described by family and friends as ambitious, outgoing, and entrepreneurial. Public reporting and family interviews stated that he had interests in business ventures, cryptocurrency, stocks, and future financial success.
He was reportedly very close with his family and was one of seven siblings. Those closest to him described him as charismatic and motivated, with plans and goals extending far beyond his teenage years.
Family members later stated that Dominic’s relationship with Mackenzie Shirilla had become increasingly volatile in the months leading up to the crash.
Davion Flanagan
Davion Flanagan was remembered by loved ones as loyal, athletic, outgoing, and deeply loved by his family and friends.
Friends and family described him as highly creative and passionate about barbering. He had recently completed his senior football season with the Strongsville Mustangs and was reportedly working full-time while saving money to attend barber college. Loved ones stated he enjoyed cutting hair for teammates and friends and hoped to turn that passion into a future career.
Following his death, family members and community supporters later worked to establish memorial and scholarship-related efforts in his honor.
Both young men were described by loved ones as teenagers with futures still unfolding before their lives were suddenly cut short.
The Investigation That Changed Everything
In the days following the crash, investigators began examining whether the collision had been intentional.
As forensic evidence was analyzed, prosecutors later argued the case no longer resembled a reckless driving incident but instead pointed toward deliberate conduct.
Crash reconstruction evidence reportedly showed:
- The vehicle accelerated before impact
- No braking occurred
- Steering input allegedly remained active before collision
- The vehicle maintained direction toward the building
- No mechanical failures were identified
Investigators also began reviewing the relationship between Mackenzie Shirilla and Dominic Russo.
Witness testimony later described a relationship allegedly marked by repeated arguments, breakups, emotional conflict, and threats.
One witness testified that during an earlier July 2022 argument, Shirilla allegedly stated:
“I’m going to wreck this car right now.”
Additional cellphone videos later introduced in court reportedly captured threats directed toward Dominic Russo.
GPS evidence allegedly showed Shirilla had been near the crash location days before the incident, something prosecutors later argued demonstrated familiarity with the route and area.
As the investigation progressed, authorities shifted from treating the case solely as a traffic fatality to pursuing homicide charges.
The case drew massive national attention due to:
- The ages of those involved
- The brutality of the crash
- The debate over intent
- Questions surrounding toxicology and mental state
- The unusual decision to pursue murder charges in a crash case
Public reaction quickly became sharply divided.
Some believed the evidence clearly pointed toward intentional murder.
Others argued the case reflected reckless behavior, emotional instability, or impairment rather than deliberate homicide.
Reconstructing the Final Minutes
Multiple agencies participated in the investigation and reconstruction of the crash scene.
Investigators reviewed:
- Crash reconstruction evidence
- Surveillance footage
- Vehicle event data recorder downloads
- GPS location history
- Cellphone evidence
- Medical and toxicology findings
- Witness interviews
- Relationship history evidence
The crash site itself became a central focus of analysis due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the impact.
Authorities reportedly examined:
- Tire marks
- Vehicle trajectory
- Steering behavior
- Speed calculations
- Mechanical integrity of the vehicle
- Environmental conditions
Investigators ultimately stated there were no mechanical defects capable of causing the collision.
Toxicology findings became another major focus.
Psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana-related evidence, and drug-related items were reportedly recovered during the investigation. However, court records later indicated toxicology results were negative for alcohol and psilocybin at the time of the crash.
The defense later argued medical issues and impairment may have contributed to the collision, including discussion involving POTS syndrome and possible blackout-related theories.
Prosecutors rejected those explanations, arguing the driving pattern demonstrated deliberate control of the vehicle.
What the Courts Officially Determined
In 2023, Mackenzie Shirilla was convicted following a bench trial in Cuyahoga County.
She was found guilty on multiple charges, including:
- Murder
- Felonious assault
- Aggravated vehicular homicide
- Drug-related offenses
The trial judge later described the crash as:
“Controlled, methodical, deliberate, intentional, and purposeful.”
Shirilla was sentenced to two concurrent terms of 15 years to life in prison.
Appeals later challenged the sufficiency of evidence and aspects of the trial proceedings. However, appellate courts upheld the conviction.
The Supreme Court of Ohio later declined further review.
As of 2026, Mackenzie Shirilla remains incarcerated within the Ohio prison system.
Questions That Still Remain
- What exactly occurred emotionally and psychologically inside the vehicle moments before impact?
- Why did the vehicle reportedly accelerate instead of brake?
- What role, if any, did marijuana use play?
- Why did some witnesses describe the relationship as loving while others described it as deeply toxic?
- What conversations occurred between the occupants before the crash?
- Were there additional digital communications never publicly released?
- Did every witness fully cooperate during the investigation?
- Why did public opinion become so sharply divided despite the conviction?
